Arione is one of Serralunga d’Alba’s most compelling and powerful MGAs, a southwest-facing slope at 300–380 metres on the compact Helvetian sandstone soils that define the commune’s capacity to produce Barolo of exceptional structure and extreme longevity. In Serralunga, where the geological clock runs differently than in the clay-dominant communes to the west, Arione represents the commune’s typicity at its most uncompromising — severe, mineral, and built explicitly for multi-decade cellaring.
The wines from Arione display the Serralunga fingerprint in concentrated form: iron, dark cherry, liquorice, and dried herbs on the nose, with a palate of formidable tannic structure that requires ten to fifteen years of bottle aging before the tannins begin to integrate and the underlying complexity emerges. In the best vintages — 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 — Arione produces Barolo of the highest quality, challenging the great Falletto and Vigna Rionda wines for sheer structural authority and long-term prospect. Paolo Scavino has produced compelling renditions from Arione, demonstrating the site’s ability to reward disciplined winemaking and patient collecting. This is Barolo for the long run — demanding, structured, and ultimately magnificent.
