Calderara Sottana is the most celebrated contrada in the Randazzo municipality and one of the most important on Etna’s entire northern slope, indelibly associated with Tenuta delle Terre Nere, whose founder Marco de Grazia did more than anyone to map and communicate Etna’s contrada diversity to the world.

The Terroir The contrada sits at 600–800 metres on the northern face on volcanic basalt and sandy ash — free-draining, yet rich with the minerals of ancient lava flows. The north-facing aspect moderates temperature and extends ripening, producing Nerello Mascalese of exceptional aromatic delicacy and structural finesse. Its greatest treasure is the Prephylloxera vineyard: ungrafted vines of extraordinary age surviving in the sandy volcanic soil, source of some of the rarest Etna Rosso in existence.

The Critical Take The wines show every hallmark of great northern Etna: translucent garnet, with a hauntingly complex nose of wild cherry, rose petal, volcanic earth, dried herbs, and mineral intensity, and a palate of fine, silky tannins, bright acidity, and a long saline finish. In the finest renditions — above all from the prephylloxera ungrafted vines — Calderara Sottana produces Etna Rosso that challenges the world’s greatest mountain wines for complexity and longevity.

At the Table Silky and saline, it is one of Etna’s most versatile wines at the table: grilled tuna or swordfish, roast pork, mushroom and truffle pasta, pasta alla Norma, and medium-aged Sicilian cheeses. Serve at 15 to 17 degrees in a Burgundy glass to reveal its perfume, with a light decant for young bottles. Approachable from six to eight years yet capable of fifteen and more, the prephylloxera bottling in particular repays a decade of patience with astonishing depth and clarity. For the collector, Calderara Sottana — and above all its prephylloxera bottling — sits at the very summit of Etna’s hierarchy, a wine as rare and coveted as any the volcano produces. Buy it whenever the opportunity arises, cellar it with care, and open it only when a decade or more has softened its fine tannins and drawn out its haunting perfume. Tasted at maturity beside the world’s great mountain reds, it needs no apology and offers no imitation — it is simply, unmistakably itself.
