Fossati occupies a reliable southwest-facing slope in the La Morra commune at 280–350 metres, on the blue-grey Tortonian marl soils that underpin the aromatic profile of all La Morra’s greatest vineyards. The MGA is less celebrated than Brunate or Cerequio but consistently delivers Barolo of genuine quality — wines that display the commune’s signature floral aromatics with good structural support and honest medium-term aging character.

The name “Fossati” refers to the small drainage channels and slight depressions that characterise the terrain — a topographic feature that contributes to good water management and prevents excessive compaction in the marly subsoil. Wines from Fossati show lifted rose petal and violet on the nose, supported by red cherry and a light mineral note on the palate, with silky tannins that are accessible within five to eight years of vintage. Several La Morra producers bottle a single-vineyard Fossati Barolo, and the MGA is well-regarded within Piedmont, though less widely known internationally than the commune’s front-rank sites. For students of the Barolo MGA system seeking to understand La Morra’s full aromatic range beyond the obvious references, Fossati is an intelligent and rewarding starting point.
