Liste

A quieter, southeast-facing site in the Barolo commune that produces wines of classic elegance — more approachable than Sarmassa, yet with the depth the commune always delivers.

Liste lies on the eastern flank of the Barolo commune, facing southeast toward the Serralunga ridge. Its name is thought to reference the boundary markers — liste — that once delineated the historic cru. The southeast exposure gives the vineyard a cooler morning character than the south and southwest-facing MGAs, and the resulting wines occupy a distinctive middle register in the appellation: less monolithic than the great Serralunga sites, less overtly perfumed than the La Morra classics, and beautifully poised between the two. It is best known through its association with one of Barolo’s most revered traditionalist houses.

The Terroir At 220–280 metres Liste benefits from excellent air circulation, which preserves acidity and reduces disease pressure through the growing season. The Tortonian soils here are well-drained and moderately fertile, giving Nebbiolo an expressive but not overly plush character — fragrance and finesse without excess flesh. It is a terroir that favours precision over power, and the wines carry that stamp of clarity from the first vintage of their evolution to the last, ageing on freshness rather than sheer mass.

The Critical Take The wines become accessible after eight to ten years and continue to evolve for two decades, holding their floral, precise character throughout. Good structure underpins them, but none of the austerity of the Helvetian communes intrudes; instead there is rose, red cherry, iron, and a fine mineral thread that lengthens with age. Liste is a connoisseur’s cru — quietly excellent, rarely showy, and all the more rewarding for it. Bartolo Mascarello’s decision to include its fruit in his single, uncompromising Barolo is testament enough to the site’s pedigree.

At the Table Its floral precision and moderate weight make Liste a graceful match for tajarin with truffle, veal, roast fowl, agnolotti, and mushroom dishes, moving to braised meats and aged cheeses as it ages. Serve at 16–18°C with a short decant for younger bottles. Liste rewards the patient without punishing them: it opens after eight to ten years and holds for two decades, making it a rare great Barolo that is neither austere nor fleeting. Serve from a large glass with a short decant to lift its fragrance.
