Rue is one of the Barolo commune’s most consistently celebrated MGAs, a south-facing slope at 260–330 metres on Tortonian blue-grey marls that has been closely associated with Roberto Voerzio — one of Barolo’s most influential producers — for decades. In Voerzio’s hands, Rue produces wines of extraordinary concentration and aromatic intensity: the result of dramatically low yields, impeccably managed viticulture, and a commitment to extracting the maximum expression from a site inherently capable of greatness.
The Tortonian soils of Rue, rich in calcareous clay and marine sediments, give the wines a generous textural base — silky, complete tannins, rounded and long — while the south-facing aspect ensures full phenolic ripeness across the growing season. The nose is expansive: dried rose, cherry, spice, leather, and mineral earth, building in complexity across one to two decades in bottle. The palate is rich but disciplined, the acidity keeping the concentration in check and providing the framework for extended aging. Beyond Voerzio, other Barolo producers also work parcels in Rue, each bringing a different perspective to a site versatile enough to accommodate both modernist and traditionalist winemaking approaches. Rue is a Barolo MGA of the first order — not as instantly famous as Cannubi but equally worthy of serious attention and cellar investment.
