2020 Amista Nizza
It is a rare event to see a true Nizza DOCG hit the shelf at twenty dollars. When you consider
I have reviewed one wine from Amista: the 2020 Amista Nizza (94 points).
Amista is a small Nizza DOCG producer working the chalk-rich soils at the heart of Barbera’s most demanding appellation. Nizza is Piedmont’s answer to structural Barbera, a zone where the grape is held to Nebbiolo-like standards of concentration and ageing, and too many modern examples buy that structure with heavy extraction, syrupy fruit and new oak.
Amista goes the other way, letting calcareous soils supply tension and lift rather than burying the fruit under cellar technique. Its Nizza, from chalk-dominant soils, is a direct rebuttal of the over-made style: Barbera with genuine architecture and a saline snap, with enough structure to appeal to lovers of Cabernet as well as Barbera. The 2020 shows the approach clearly, and the estate consistently offers some of the sharpest values in the denomination.
