Amorotti

I have reviewed three wines from Amorotti, from the 2020 to 2022 vintages, across Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo. Most are Montepulciano. Scores range from 96 to 97, averaging 97; the highest is the 2020 Amorotti Montepulciano d’Abruzzo (97 points). Amorotti also features in one journal article on this site.

Amorotti is one of the most exciting artisanal projects to emerge from Abruzzo. Gaetano Carboni revived a historic family farm dating back to 1521 in Loreto Aprutino, right next to the legendary Valentini estate. Loreto Aprutino, in the hills of central Abruzzo between the Gran Sasso and the Adriatic, has long been regarded as one of the region’s finest terroirs: clay and limestone soils bring drainage, minerality and freshness to wines that elsewhere can be big, and the vineyards face southeast.

The farm has been certified organic since 2009. In the ancient cellar, every fermentation is spontaneous, driven by the indigenous yeasts and bacteria that have lived there for centuries — which is why Gaetano keeps visits to a minimum, to avoid disturbing that balance.

The Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, from traditional tendone-trained vines, spends more than a year in a 550-litre Slavonian barrel and six months in bottle: layered and mineral, with stone fruit, dried lime, honey and chamomile, and built to age. The Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo, made only from Montepulciano and aged a year in large Slavonian oak, has red cherry, quince and clementine zest. The Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, two years in Slavonian barrels, is bold yet balanced, with blueberry, plum, bergamot and a meaty minerality.
