I have reviewed three wines from Avignonesi, from the 2014 to 2020 vintages, all from Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. All are Sangiovese. Scores range from 95 to 96, averaging 96; the highest is the 2014 Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (Library Release) (96 points).
Once known for powerful, oak-driven wines, Avignonesi has been radically transformed under the ownership of Virginie Saverys. It is now one of Italy’s largest biodynamic estates and a leader in sustainable viticulture in Montepulciano, and it has turned its Vino Nobile into a 100% Sangiovese, abandoning international blending grapes to show the purity of the local variety.
The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is now defined by transparency and energy: cherry, red plum, violet, spice and tobacco, with silky tannins and a lively acidity. With age it becomes seamless and velvety — the 2014 library release, dressed in labels by the artist Amrita Marino, showed dried cherry, worn leather and forest floor on fully resolved tannins, proving that ethical farming and larger-scale production can coexist with elegance.
