Barale

I have reviewed three wines from Barale, from the 2020 to 2024 vintages, across Barolo and Langhe. All are Nebbiolo. Scores range from 94 to 96, averaging 95; the highest is the 2021 Fratelli Barale Barolo (96 points). Barale also features in one journal article on this site.

Founded in 1870 in the heart of the village of Barolo, Fratelli Barale is one of the historic old-guard houses of the appellation, still family-run and now led by Sergio Barale and his daughters. It holds parcels in legendary crus such as Cannubi and Castellero and remains a bastion of traditionalism.

The winemaking is staunchly classic: native yeasts, long macerations and ageing in large Slavonian oak casks, letting the terroir speak for itself. The resulting Barolos are elegant and aromatic, showing Nebbiolo’s floral side with grace and restraint — wild berry, red cherry, dried rose and white pepper on fine tannins and nervous acidity, as in the classic 2021. Built for the long haul, they reward patience.

The Langhe Nebbiolo, from the family’s younger vines, is the ultimate baby Barolo: translucent, fragrant and lifted, and an insider’s introduction to one of Barolo’s great old families.
