Baricci

I have reviewed three wines from Baricci, from the 2019 to 2024 vintages, across Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino. All are Sangiovese. Scores range from 96 to 98, averaging 97; the highest is the 2021 Baricci “Montosoli” Brunello di Montalcino (98 points). Baricci also features in one journal article on this site.

Baricci is the quintessential insider’s Brunello. The small family estate lies entirely on the celebrated Montosoli hill on the north side of Montalcino, where the Colombaio vineyard’s cooler, galestro-rich microclimate gives wines of perfume and acidity rather than muscle. Ageing is done exclusively in large Slavonian oak, so the wines are never weighed down by wood.

The Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli is the benchmark for the hill: pure, silky and weightless yet persistent, with truffle, violet, wild berries and a dusty minerality. The 2021 is a modern legend. The Riserva, from the oldest vines and aged longer in Slavonian oak, is the deeper, darker counterpart; the 2019 is brooding and built for decades.

Because the whole estate lies within Montosoli, even the Rosso di Montalcino is effectively declassified cru Brunello. In 2024, the hill’s northern exposure preserved vibrant acidity through a hot July, giving a Rosso of wild strawberries, crushed rock and saline tension. Baricci represents the peasant soul of Montalcino: honest, unpretentious and consistently outperforming estates many times its size.

2021 Brunello di Montalcino – Vintage Report

If 2019 was operatic and 2020 was sunny, 2021 is the year of transparency. This is a vintage that vibrates with energy, defined by significant diurnal shifts that locked in soaring aromatics and “al dente” fruit profiles. Moving away from sheer muscle, the 2021 Brunellos are architectural and nervy, showcasing a savory, saline grip that speaks clearly of the Montalcino soil. For the collector who values elegance and tension over weight, this is a sophisticated, “intellectual” vintage that promises a fascinating evolution in the cellar.
