Castello di Verduno

I have reviewed two wines from Castello di Verduno, from the 2022 to 2023 vintages, all from Verduno. All are Pelaverga. Scores range from 94 to 95, averaging 95; the highest is the 2022 Castello di Verduno “Basadone” Pelaverga (95 points).

Castello di Verduno is rare in owning prime vineyards in both Barolo and Barbaresco. The estate is historically significant, once owned by the House of Savoy, and it is famous for its Barolo from Monvigliero, one of the most elegant and perfumed crus in the region. The winemaking is strictly traditional, favouring grace over power, and the wines prioritise the floral and spicy nuances of Nebbiolo rather than its muscle.

The estate is also a long-standing champion of Pelaverga, a rare, ancient grape of Verduno. Its “Basadone” Verduno Pelaverga, from the cool slopes of the village, is a fine introduction: bright wild strawberry, raspberry and red cherry, with the white pepper, rose petal and herbal spice the grape is famous for. Fresh and light-textured, with fine tannins and bright acidity, it is a genuinely different Piedmontese red, ideal with charcuterie, grilled chicken or pasta with a simple tomato sauce.
