De Conciliis

I have reviewed two wines from De Conciliis, from the 2021 to 2022 vintages, all from Paestum Rosso. All are Aglianico. Scores range from 93 to 94, averaging 94; the highest is the 2021 De Conciliis “Bacioilcielo” Paestum Rosso IGP Campania Aglianico (94 points).

Bruno De Conciliis is often called the poet of Cilento. Based in the rugged hills south of the Amalfi Coast, he was a pioneer in proving the potential of the region, and his philosophy blends organic farming with a deep love of jazz: the flagship Aglianico, “Naima”, is named after the John Coltrane song. He champions Aglianico and Fiano, making wines that are wild, soulful and Mediterranean, marked by salinity and a natural vibrancy that sets them apart from the more polished wines of Irpinia.

“Bacioilcielo”, a Paestum Rosso, shows the more approachable side of Aglianico, a grape better known for power and grip. Ripe blackberry, cherry and plum meet subtle herbs and spice, and the variety’s firm tannins are softened by the wine’s natural juiciness and balanced acidity. It is a versatile red for grilled meats, barbecues and pizza nights, and a good introduction for anyone who finds bigger Aglianico too severe.
