I have reviewed one wine from De Vescovi Ulzbach: the 2023 De Vescovi Ulzbach Rosso Ulzbach Teroldego Rotaliano (95 points).
De Vescovi Ulzbach is a historic reference point for Teroldego Rotaliano. In the family since 1641, the estate lies on the Campo Rotaliano, a flat alluvial plain in Trentino surrounded by the Dolomites. Giulio de Vescovi is dedicated to the noble potential of Teroldego, treating it with the respect usually reserved for Cabernet or Nebbiolo, and fermenting in concrete or large oak to preserve the grape’s blueberry, blood orange and earthy character.
The wines are alpine reds of structure and elegance, uniting ageing potential with lively energy. The “Rosso Ulzbach”, 100% Teroldego, is dark ruby, with black raspberry, dark plum and wild blackberry over graphite, violet and forest floor, and a mineral streak that reflects the gravelly alluvial soils. Lifted and energetic, it is a refined yet heartfelt red for charcuterie, grilled pork, mushroom dishes and alpine cheeses, and proof that Teroldego is a world-class variety.
