Elio Altare is the most incendiary of the original Barolo Boys, the La Morra grower who in 1983 took a chainsaw to his father’s old botti and was disinherited by his family for it. The rebellion was technical—short macerations, temperature control, French barriques—but Altare has always insisted it was social first: a generation of Langhe farmers refusing to be ashamed of the land they worked. From crus including Arborina, Brunate, and Cerretta, the estate makes Barolo of perfumed precision and velvet texture. His daughter Silvia now runs it, and the wines have never been better.
