I have reviewed one wine from Fontanavecchia: the 2024 Fontanavecchia Bjondore Falanghina Del Sannio (94 points).
Fontanavecchia farms the steep slopes of Torrecuso in Campania’s Sannio district, where the Taburno massif shapes a cooler, more nervous style than the Aglianico of Irpinia. The Rillo family has been the guardian of viticulture here for generations and is now the benchmark producer of the zone, known for wines that show the minerality and longevity of the local grapes.
Its Aglianico del Taburno is firm and mineral rather than a blockbuster, while the Falanghina shows why the variety deserves better than its reputation as a simple holiday white. The “Bjondore” Falanghina del Sannio shines straw-gold, with citrus, white peach, pineapple, white flowers and a hint of crushed stone. Medium-bodied and zesty, it has the weight and texture to stand up to food, a savory, almost salty edge and a clean, dry finish, perfect with fried calamari, clam linguine or a seafood feast.
Fontanavecchia is proof that Sannio, long overshadowed by Taurasi, has a voice of its own.
