Foradori

I have reviewed three wines from Foradori, from the 2020 to 2022 vintages, all from Vigneti delle Dolomiti. All are Teroldego. Scores range from 94 to 96, averaging 95; the highest is the 2020 Foradori “Granato” Teroldego Vigneti Delle Dolomiti (96 points). Foradori also features in one journal article on this site.

Elisabetta Foradori took over her family estate in the Alpine foothills of Trentino in 1984, at just twenty, and transformed Teroldego — the “Prince of Trentino” — from an overlooked local grape into one of Italy’s most important reds. A pioneer of biodynamic farming, low-intervention winemaking and ageing in amphorae, she is considered by many the most important biodynamic producer in northern Italy, and she now works with her children Emilio, Theo and Myrtha.

The vineyards lie in the Campo Rotaliano, a small plateau between the Dolomites that is one of the warmest spots in Italy in summer, yet cooled by Alpine breezes, on alluvial soils and gravel. Granato, first made in 1986 and named after the pomegranate, is the flagship: fermented with native yeasts and aged about 15 months in neutral oak, plush and juicy, with blackberry, pomegranate and violets.

The two amphora-aged Teroldegos show the grape’s other faces. Sgarzon, from a sandier, cooler vineyard higher up, is the most delicate and lifted, with red fruit, roses and a saline finish. Morei, meaning “dark” in dialect, comes from heavier, stonier soil and is bolder, all black plum, blackberry and graphite, yet still lifted. Lezèr is the vibrant, easygoing end of the range.
