I have reviewed one wine from Gianfranco Bovio: the 2023 Gianfranco Bovio ‘Firagnetti’ Langhe Nebbiolo (96 points).
The Bovio family holds a revered place in La Morra. Originally famous as local restaurateurs, the late Gianfranco Bovio revitalised his father’s estate in the 1970s and built a winery that became a benchmark for classic, terroir-driven Nebbiolo. His love for the land produced wines of grace and territorial honesty, and today the third generation carries on the historic Langhe style.
The estate, above the village of La Morra, holds parcels in some of the commune’s finest crus, notably Gattera and Arborina. Its Barolos are quintessentially La Morra: perfumed and silky, approachable young compared with other communes, yet with the structure and depth to age well.
“Firagnetti”, named after a Piedmontese dialect term for a vineyard area with short rows, is the introduction to the Bovio philosophy. The Langhe Nebbiolo comes from younger vines on La Morra’s calcareous clay and offers the pedigree of Barolo without the wait: translucent ruby, with dried cherries, crushed roses, leather and spice, lively and graceful, a dream with agnolotti del plin or roast poultry.
