I have reviewed one wine from Le Casematte: the 2022 Le Casematte “Peloro” Rosso Terre Siciliane (94 points). Le Casematte also features in one journal article on this site.
On the steep hillsides above the Strait of Messina, Le Casematte is bringing new life to Faro, an ancient and nearly forgotten appellation in the far north-east of Sicily, and has quickly become one of its best producers. Founded in 2008 by Gianfranco Sabbatino and former football star Andrea Barzagli, the estate takes its name from the Second World War bunkers (casematte) scattered through the vineyards.
Strong sea breezes and wide day-night swings shape wines from native varieties such as Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and the rare Nocera, which adds freshness and salinity. This is the only part of Sicily where Nerello Mascalese grows away from Etna. The wines are lifted, with red berry fruit, Mediterranean herbs and bright, saline acidity.
The Faro blend makes some of the most elegantly structured wines in Italy, complex and age-worthy. “Peloro”, from the same grapes, is its younger sibling: shorter maceration and only a touch of barrel make it juicy, fresh and vibrant, lovely on its own or with seafood.
