Livio Sassetti

I have reviewed two wines from Livio Sassetti, from the 2019 to 2022 vintages, across Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino. All are Sangiovese. Scores range from 95 to 96, averaging 96; the highest is the 2019 Livio Sassetti “Pertimali” Brunello di Montalcino (96 points). Livio Sassetti also features in one journal article on this site.

The Sassetti family has deep roots in Montalcino, and its Pertimali estate, founded in the early 1900s, sits on the famous Montosoli hill in the north of the appellation, widely considered one of the region’s best crus. The vineyards are higher and cooler than most, on limestone-rich soils that give freshness and precision. Livio Sassetti and his son Lorenzo are traditionalists, and the wines have a loyal following for their consistency and ability to age.

The Pertimali Brunello is a wine for purists, often described as rustic-elegant, with leather, truffle and dark cherry. It is aged for 36 months in large Slavonian oak, giving a firm traditional backbone while staying approachable young. In the majestic 2019 vintage it is lifted and ethereal, and in 2021 it captured the crunchy red fruit that defines the northern reach of the vintage.

The Rosso di Montalcino, also aged in large Slavonian casks, is a true baby Brunello. Even in the hot 2022 vintage the cool Pertimali site kept it lifted and energetic, with a long, savory, mineral finish.

2021 Brunello di Montalcino – Vintage Report

If 2019 was operatic and 2020 was sunny, 2021 is the year of transparency. This is a vintage that vibrates with energy, defined by significant diurnal shifts that locked in soaring aromatics and “al dente” fruit profiles. Moving away from sheer muscle, the 2021 Brunellos are architectural and nervy, showcasing a savory, saline grip that speaks clearly of the Montalcino soil. For the collector who values elegance and tension over weight, this is a sophisticated, “intellectual” vintage that promises a fascinating evolution in the cellar.
