2022 Luigi Coppo e Figli “Pomorosso” Nizza
The 97-point “Best in Show” distinction at the Decanter World Wine Awards is not just another shiny badge; it is
I have reviewed one wine from Luigi Coppo e Figli: the 2022 Luigi Coppo e Figli “Pomorosso” Nizza (97 points).
Luigi Coppo e Figli is one of the historic houses of Canelli, founded in 1892 and family-run for four generations. Its cellars, the Cattedrali Sotterranee carved into the tuff beneath the town, are a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the house made its name on Barbera long before the variety was fashionable.
The flagship is “Pomorosso”, from old vines in the Nizza zone: dense, saline and built for the cellar. The 2022 became the first Barbera ever named Best in Show at the Decanter World Wine Awards, a turning point in how the trade sees the grape.
What sets Pomorosso apart is athleticism rather than size: concentrated black fruit balanced by a vertical spine of acidity and the saline snap of Nizza, which lets it stand beside Piedmont’s most prestigious crus. It shows that Nizza can make unmanipulated, age-worthy wine even in warmer vintages.
The 97-point “Best in Show” distinction at the Decanter World Wine Awards is not just another shiny badge; it is
