2021 Mazzoni Colline Novaresi Nebbiolo
The 2021 Mazzoni Colin Novaresi Nebbiolo is a superb showcase of Nebbiolo’s elegance and versatility, offering an accessible, everyday style
I have reviewed one wine from Mazzoni: the 2021 Mazzoni Colline Novaresi Nebbiolo (93 points).
Tiziano Mazzoni is a staunch traditionalist and a pillar of the Ghemme appellation in Alto Piemonte. With just a few hectares in the hills of Novara, he is devoted to Spanna, the local name for Nebbiolo. His approach is resolutely artisanal: organic farming, long macerations and ageing in medium to large oak barrels.
His Ghemme DOCG and Nebbiolo are textbook wines of the region, austere, mineral and scented with dried roses, tar and alpine herbs, with a nervous energy and longevity that rival the Langhe but a distinctly savory northern character.
The Colline Novaresi Nebbiolo, from the zone around Ghemme and Gattinara, shows the lighter, more floral side of the grape that the cooler climate brings. The 2021 opens with red cherry, wild berries and dried rose petals, spice, tobacco and earthy minerality. Medium-bodied and elegant, with smooth tannins and bright acidity, it is a fine introduction to Nebbiolo for risotto, grilled chicken or charcuterie.
