I have reviewed one wine from Piccolo Goccio: the 2024 Piccolo Goccio Sangiovese (90 points).
Piccolo Goccio, Italian for “little drop”, is a small, artisanal project whose name reflects both its intimate scale and its philosophy: great wine comes from attention and patience rather than volume.
Its Sangiovese is a return to the grape’s unadulterated, rustic roots in central Italy, at a time when Sangiovese is often blended, heavily oaked or polished for international tastes. The fruit comes from small, dedicated plots in the Tuscan hills, and the low-intervention winemaking, in stainless steel or neutral vessels, steps aside to let the terroir speak.
The result captures the joyful, nervous energy of the grape. Brilliant, translucent ruby, it offers crunchy red cherry, wild strawberry and a savory hint of wild thyme. Light on its feet, with mouthwatering acidity and a dusty, earthy finish, it is an honest, glou-glou Sangiovese for a picnic with hard pecorino and finocchiona.
