Poggiarellino

I have reviewed four wines from Poggiarellino, from the 2016 to 2024 vintages, across Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino. All are Sangiovese. Scores range from 93 to 97, averaging 95; the highest is the 2016 Poggiarellino Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (97 points). Poggiarellino also features in one journal article on this site.

Poggiarellino is a small family estate that embodies the honest charm of traditional Montalcino. The vineyards, just 3 hectares in the northern part of the appellation, are tended by Lodovico and Marzio Ginotti, and everything is done the old-school way: sustainable farming, native-yeast fermentation in cement and long, slow ageing in large Slavonian oak casks.

There is no flash here — just pure Sangiovese that speaks of the vintage. The northern, higher vineyards give freshness and precision even in warm years: the 2019 Brunello, aged 36 months in Slavonian oak, is classic and structured, while the 2020 is more generous and approachable, with firm but polished tannins. The 2016 Riserva, which rested four and a half years in barrel, is a throwback to a style of Brunello that is becoming hard to find, full of dried cherry, forest floor, leather and truffle.

The Rosso di Montalcino is crunchy and savory, with sour red cherry and wild herbs — a classic old-school Rosso. Poggiarellino is the quintessential farmer’s Brunello, lean, savory and truly cellar-worthy.
