I have reviewed one wine from San Filippo: the 2017 San Filippo Le Lucere Brunello Di Montalcino (95 points).
San Filippo is a highly regarded small estate in Montalcino, known for Brunello that combines depth and structure with a distinctive aromatic freshness. Its most celebrated bottling is the single-vineyard “Le Lucère”, which has earned consistent acclaim for pairing Montalcino’s power with genuine elegance.
The cru proved its worth in the hot 2017 vintage, protecting the wine from the heavy, roasted character that marked many Brunellos of the year. The nose is high-toned, with wild mint, crushed galestro stone and a crunchy core of dark sour cherry and dried blood orange peel, serious and demanding.
On the palate it refuses to be fat or syrupy. Where lesser wines of the vintage collapse under their own weight, Le Lucère drives forward with a razor-sharp, vertical spine of acidity, and it is now in its ideal drinking window.
