I have reviewed four wines from Talenti, from the 2019 to 2021 vintages, all from Brunello di Montalcino. All are Sangiovese. Scores range from 94 to 98, averaging 96; the highest is the 2019 Talenti “Piero” Brunello di Montalcino (98 points). Talenti also features in one journal article on this site.
Talenti is a historic name in Montalcino, founded by Pierluigi Talenti, who helped map the region’s clonal diversity. Now run by his grandson Riccardo, the estate lies in the south of the appellation near Sant’Angelo in Colle, where vineyards vary widely in altitude and soil, from clay to stony galestro. Riccardo has modernized the winery while respecting tradition.
It is a mistake to associate the south of Montalcino only with sun and extraction, and Talenti proves it. In a balanced vintage like 2021, the Brunello di Montalcino is tense and vertical, with crunchy cherry, blood orange, Mediterranean scrub and wild mint, and a saline drive rather than mid-palate weight; in the great 2019 it was a powerhouse with the structure for 15 to 20 years.
Piero, dedicated to the founder, is a strict selection of the oldest and best-exposed vines. It is darker and more introspective than the Brunello — blackberry, graphite, violet and a ferrous stamp — and in 2021 it showed the darker, more savory side of the vintage without ever feeling heavy. Talenti’s wines are known for their consistency and classic expression of the southern terroir.

If 2019 was operatic and 2020 was sunny, 2021 is the year of transparency. This is a vintage that vibrates with energy, defined by significant diurnal shifts that locked in soaring aromatics and “al dente” fruit profiles. Moving away from sheer muscle, the 2021 Brunellos are architectural and nervy, showcasing a savory, saline grip that speaks clearly of the Montalcino soil. For the collector who values elegance and tension over weight, this is a sophisticated, “intellectual” vintage that promises a fascinating evolution in the cellar.
