I have reviewed one wine from Tascante: the 2022 Tascante “Ghiaia Nera” Etna Rosso (94 points).
Tascante is the Etna project of Tasca d’Almerita, the aristocratic Sicilian house whose home estate, Regaleali, lies in the island’s interior. Arriving on the volcano’s north slope around two decades ago, the family applied its resources to a set of contrade, Sciaranuova, Rampante and Pianodario, farming old-vine Nerello Mascalese and Carricante on terraced lava. Tascante brings estate discipline and long-term thinking to a region full of newcomers.
“Ghiaia Nera”, the entry Etna Rosso, captures the house signature. It is 100% Nerello Mascalese that pulses with volcanic energy, striking a balance between the elegance of Pinot Noir and the structure of Nebbiolo, with red berry fruit, woodsmoke and incense.
