I have reviewed one wine from Tenute Silvio Nardi: the 2022 Tenute Silvio Nardi Rosso di Montalcino (92 points).
To understand the modern history of Montalcino, look at Silvio Nardi. In 1950, long before Brunello became a global luxury icon, Nardi, a successful agricultural machinery manufacturer from Umbria, bought the historic Casale del Bosco estate. An outsider with a bold vision, he was one of the very first to bottle Brunello and a founding member of the local Consorzio. Today his daughter Emilia leads the estate with a focus on precision viticulture.
Tenute Silvio Nardi is one of Montalcino’s larger estates, with vineyards in both the cooler north and the warmer south, which gives it a broad palette. Its most celebrated bottling is the single-vineyard “Manachiara”, a Brunello of finesse, perfume and longevity.
The Rosso di Montalcino, from younger vines across different exposures on galestro and alberese soils, captures Sangiovese’s immediate energy. The 2022 trades Brunello’s brooding tannins for bright, vertical energy, with sour cherry, violet and dusty earth, lively and savory, a baby Brunello for lamb ragù or a simple pizza.
