2021 Trediberri ‘Berri’ Barolo
If you want to understand the electric, nervous energy of this classic vintage, Trediberri’s “Berri” is exactly where you need
I have reviewed one wine from Trediberri: the 2021 Trediberri ‘Berri’ Barolo (97 points). Trediberri also features in one journal article on this site.
Trediberri, literally “three from Berri”, is a young, dynamic estate in La Morra. It was founded by Nicola Oberto, his father Federico and Vladimiro Rambaldi, in the hamlet of Berri at the western edge of the Barolo zone. The estate prioritises drinkability and fruit over extraction, and its wines, especially the Barolo “del Comune di La Morra”, are joyful and unpretentious: serious about farming, fun in the glass.
Nicola Oberto makes some of the most transparent, terroir-driven wines in La Morra today. The Berri cru sits at the far western edge of the village, cooled by winds from the Tanaro river, a microclimate that proved a gift in the structured 2021 vintage.
The 2021 “Berri” Barolo is one of the essential nervy La Morra wines, with a classic chalky tannin. It relies on a vertical spine of acidity and aromatic lift rather than extraction: blood orange peel and white pepper with a balsamic edge, crunchy and linear, with saline tension and a crystalline transparency that makes it thrilling even young.

After a series of warmer, solar vintages, 2021 marks a majestic return to the “Alpine” soul of Nebbiolo. Defined by a long, snowy winter and a perfectly paced autumn, this is a vintage of noble austerity and breathtaking precision. These are not the open-knit wines of 2020; they are tension-filled, vertical, and built for the long haul. With “crunchy” red fruit, savory minerality, and a spine of vibrant acidity, 2021 is being hailed as the most complete and “classic” vintage since 2016—a year where the distinct terroir of each commune is rendered in high definition.
