Mosconi sits on the southwest-facing hillsides above Monforte d’Alba at 300–400 metres, in the core of the Helvetian geological zone. Like all of Monforte’s great MGAs, it is built on compact Serravallian marls that stress the vine, reduce yields, and concentrate flavour — the raw material of some of the most structured and long-lived wines in the appellation. In the modern hierarchy of the commune it stands alongside Ginestra and Bussia as one of Monforte’s three great crus.

The Terroir The high altitude — among the greatest in Monforte — keeps temperatures cool enough for a long hang time, allowing Nebbiolo to ripen slowly and develop the mineral complexity characteristic of the commune’s finest wines. The southwest exposure ensures full afternoon ripening without sacrificing freshness, and the poor, compact marls force the vine to dig deep, yielding fruit of real concentration and density year after year.

The Critical Take Mosconi is structured, mineral, long-lived, and deeply coloured. The wines lean toward dark fruit, tobacco, dried rose, and earth, with a firmness of tannin in youth that demands patience and repays it in full. A serious Mosconi from a great vintage will still be improving fifteen years after harvest, gaining spice and savoury depth while holding the mineral tension that is its birthright. It is Monforte in its most uncompromising register.

At the Table This is a wine for the table’s heartiest dishes — brasato al Barolo, braised beef cheek, wild boar ragù, and game — with truffle and aged Castelmagno as it matures. Decant young bottles well ahead, two hours or more, and serve at 16–18°C from a large Burgundy-style glass to give the powerful tannins room to unwind. Mosconi is built for the long haul and needs it: give a serious bottle at least a decade, and ideally fifteen years, before expecting it to show its hand. Decant young wines two hours or more in advance and serve them at 16 to 18 degrees from a large Burgundy-style glass, which gives the powerful, mineral tannins the air they need to soften and the dark, savoury fruit the room to expand across a long meal.
