Rizzi is a south-facing MGA in the Treiso commune at 250–320 metres on Tortonian blue-grey marl soils, closely associated with the Rizzi estate that takes its name directly from this vineyard and has worked it as the heart of their Barbaresco program for generations. The estate’s commitment to the site — reflected in the full range of wines bottled under the Rizzi name, from Langhe Nebbiolo to Barbaresco Riserva — has made it one of Treiso’s most thoroughly documented and consistently performing MGAs.
Barbaresco from Rizzi shows the balance between aromatic expressiveness and structural authority that the best Treiso sites achieve: rose petal, dried cherry, spice, and a mineral-earth note on the nose; medium-to-full-weight tannins with good acid backbone and a long, persistent finish on the palate. The Tortonian soils provide the textural completeness and aromatic generosity that underpin the wine’s accessibility relative to the harder geological sites, while Treiso’s altitude maintains the natural freshness that gives the wines their particular definition and sense of energy. Rizzi typically reaches its best after ten to fifteen years of bottle aging, developing the full complexity — truffle, leather, dried herbs, mineral earth — associated with great Barbaresco from a serious estate and a well-sited vineyard. It is a benchmark for the Treiso commune’s quality potential.
