Located in the “Cuore Antico” (Ancient Heart) of Tuscany, Rosso di Montalcino is a prestigious DOC appellation dedicated to the Sangiovese grape. Unlike many other Tuscan appellations that allow for blending, the regulations for Rosso di Montalcino are strict, requiring the wine to be produced from 100% Sangiovese. This appellation generally represents a more accessible, earlier-drinking counterpart to the region’s famous Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, though it is produced from the same grape and territory. Historically, the Sangiovese of this area was often referred to by synonyms such as Brunello or Prugnolo.

The Terroir The production zone covers the hill of Montalcino, which offers a warmer climate than the Chianti Classico zone to the north. The terroir is geologically diverse and complex, characterized by soils rich in marl, palombine (limestone), clay, and marine sands. The specific location of the vineyard on the Montalcino hill dramatically influences the style of the wine:

  • Northern Sector: Vineyards near the town of Montalcino or just north of it tend to produce wines that are “lithe and refined,” characterized by mouth-searing acidity and aromas of red currant and sour red cherry.
  • Southern Sectors: Vineyards in the lower, warmer southeastern (Castelnuovo dell’Abate) and southwestern (Sant’Angelo in Colle) sectors produce wines that are “fleshier and richer,” with aromas of ripe red cherry and dark plum.

The Critical Take Rosso di Montalcino serves as a lens into the specific microclimates of the zone. Ian D’Agata notes that the capacity of Sangiovese to translate even minute differences in soil and microclimate is so profound that Rossos (and Brunellos) from different sides of the hill “can almost seem like different wines”. While often lighter and developing sooner than their Brunello counterparts, these wines offer significant structure and typicity.

The Rules Rosso di Montalcino requires a minimum of one year’s aging before release, against the five years demanded of Brunello di Montalcino, and there is no obligation to use wood. In practice the wine plays two quite different roles: for some estates it is a genuine second wine, drawing on younger vines or on parcels declassified from the Brunello selection; for others it is a deliberate cuvée in its own right, picked and vinified for early drinking rather than treated as an offcut. The difference is worth knowing, because it shows in the glass.

At the Table This is the Montalcino wine for a weeknight rather than an occasion. It suits pici with a simple meat ragù, grilled lamb, roast chicken with rosemary, pecorino toscano, and the bean and bread soups of the Tuscan interior. Serve at 16–18°C and open it young — most examples are at their best within four or five years of the vintage.
