Serra is one of Serralunga d’Alba’s traditionally styled MGAs, occupying southwest-facing slopes at 310–380 metres on the Helvetian sandstone that makes this commune the most geologically distinctive in the Barolo zone. The name — simply “the ridge” in Piedmontese — reflects the site’s topographic identity: a pronounced hilltop spine above the village of Serralunga, exposed to the full intensity of the mountain climate while benefiting from strong afternoon sun accumulation.

Barolo from Serra displays the Serralunga character in its most traditional register: a nose of iron, tar, dark cherry, dried herbs, and rose leaf, followed by a palate of dense, firmly knit tannins and high, food-friendly acidity. The wines are slow to open — ten years of bottle aging is the minimum for the serious vintages — but they develop with admirable consistency, building layers of truffle, leather, tobacco, and mineral earth across two or more decades. Serra does not command the fame or price of Vigna Rionda or Falletto, but it occupies a respected place within the Serralunga hierarchy as a site of reliable quality and typicity. For collectors seeking the authentic Serralunga experience without the premium attached to the commune’s most celebrated MGAs, Serra is an intelligent and rewarding choice.
