Sottocastello di Novello — “below the castle of Novello” — occupies the slopes directly beneath the hilltop village, the highest-elevation village in the Barolo DOCG zone. At 360–440 metres on mixed calcareous clay and marl soils, this is one of the most elevated MGAs in the entire Barolo appellation, a position that exerts a profound influence on the character of the wines produced here.
The altitude of Sottocastello di Novello is its defining terroir variable. The diurnal temperature range — warm days, significantly cooler nights — preserves natural acidity and extends the growing season, allowing Nebbiolo to develop complexity over a longer period than is possible at lower-altitude sites. The wines display a mountain-wine character that is unmistakably its own: alpine herbs, dried rose petal, red cherry, and mineral earth on the nose; firm, fine-grained tannins, vivid acidity, and a cool, saline mineral finish on the palate. These are wines of structure and purity rather than richness and weight, a style that rewards patient collectors and suits the rich foods of Piedmontese cooking. Sottocastello di Novello is Barolo’s high-altitude outpost: a reminder that the appellation’s expressive range extends from the rich warmth of La Morra to the alpine precision of Novello’s summit vineyards, and that both extremes produce wine of genuine and distinctive quality.
