I have reviewed one wine from Gian Luca Colombo: the 2019 Gian Luca Colombo Barolo (95 points).
Gian Luca Colombo is one of the new faces of the Langhe, a winemaker whose journey began with a passion for Burgundy. His personal project, Segni di Langa, is based in Roddi and known for the fingerprint on its labels, a symbol of his hands-on approach. A Pinot Noir enthusiast, he also makes Nebbiolo and Barbera.
His philosophy is minimal intervention, meticulous vineyard work, small-scale production and sustainable farming. The style is modern in its precision but deeply respectful of terroir, and the wines are vibrant, full of tension and representative of a dynamic new generation of Piedmontese winemakers.
His Barolo emphasises Nebbiolo’s elegance and purity. The 2019 offers ripe red cherry, raspberry and dried rose petals with licorice, spice and earth, and a medium- to full-bodied palate of fine-grained tannins. Balanced and true to its origins, it pairs with braised beef or truffle risotto and will gain complexity over the next decade.
