La Fortuna

I have reviewed two wines from La Fortuna, from the 2019 to 2023 vintages, across Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino. All are Sangiovese. Scores range from 93 to 96, averaging 95; the highest is the 2019 La Fortuna Brunello Di Montalcino (96 points). La Fortuna also features in one journal article on this site.

The Zannoni family has farmed in Montalcino for more than a century, making Tenuta La Fortuna a consistent and deeply respected traditional estate. Its vineyards are split between the cooler northern sector near Fuligni and the warmer south near Castelnuovo dell’Abate, giving a balance of structure and aromatics. The winemaking stays classic, with slow maturation in large Slavonian oak casks.

La Fortuna’s Brunello is traditional yet accessible, expressive of Montalcino’s southern warmth while keeping purity and grace. In the great 2019 vintage it is serious, old-school and built for the long haul: deep garnet, with dark wild cherry, baked plum, sweet tobacco, worn leather and underbrush on full, muscular tannins and a driving core of acidity.

The Rosso di Montalcino is a standout vintage after vintage, made for drinking now. The 2023 is translucent ruby, with crushed red cherry, wild strawberry, baked earth and Tuscan spice, supple tannins and the mouthwatering acidity that makes Sangiovese so versatile at the table.
