Le Piane is the story of a rebirth. In the 1990s, Swiss importer Christoph Künzli discovered the abandoned vineyards of Boca, a once-famous appellation in Northern Piedmont that had been reclaimed by the forest. He spent years buying small parcels and restoring the Spanna (Nebbiolo) vines. Today, Le Piane produces the benchmark wine of the region. The Boca DOC is a blend of Nebbiolo and Vespolina, known for its spicy, pomegranate-scented nose and silky structure. Künzli’s work single-handedly saved the appellation, proving that the volcanic porphyry soils of Alto Piemonte can produce wines of world-class finesse.
Alto Piemonte, particularly Boca, boasts a unique Napa terroir for Nebbiolo grapes, significantly restored by winemaker Christoph Kunzli. His winery, Le Piane, produces exceptional, hand-crafted wines using spontaneous fermentation. The region’s volcanic soils, coupled with high-altitude vineyards, create Nebbiolo with distinct minerality and complexity. Croatina further enriches the local wine culture.
