Randi

I have reviewed two wines from Randi, from the 2020 to 2025 vintages, all from Ravenna. Scores range from 92 to 95, averaging 94; the highest is the 2020 Randi “Burson – Randi Selezione” Ravenna IGT (95 points).

Tenuta Randi is a small, quality-focused estate in the province of Ravenna, in Emilia-Romagna, and a passionate advocate for Romagna as a fine-wine region. It is one of the key members of the Consorzio Il Bagnacavallo, a small group of Romagnolo producers protecting one of Italy’s rarest grapes.

The grape’s story is a remarkable rescue. In the 1920s Antonio Longanesi found a single unknown vine climbing an old oak in the marshlands of Romagna and propagated it, saving it from extinction. Today it is known as Uva Longanesi, and its wine is trademarked as Bursôn, the historical nickname of the Longanesi family.

Grown on the alluvial plains of Ravenna, where the Adriatic tempers the climate, Longanesi is thick-skinned and rustic and demands patience in vineyard and cellar. To tame its structure, the “Selezione” Bursôn borrows from Amarone, with partial drying of the grapes and extended oak ageing. The result is dark, brooding and powerfully structured.
