2022 Barbaresco – Vintage Report
The 2022 vintage in Barbaresco is a fascinating paradox. On paper, it was a year that should have produced “cooked,”
Roagna features in one journal article on this site.
Roagna is among the most uncompromising and revered traditional estates in all of Piedmont. Based in Barbaresco, the Roagna family—now in the fifth generation under Luca Roagna—has practiced the same patient, non-interventionist viticulture and winemaking for decades, in absolute defiance of fashion. Their vineyards in Barbaresco (Pajè, Asili, Faset) and Barolo (La Rocca e La Pira in Castiglione Falletto) are farmed organically, with vine ages often exceeding fifty years. Fermentations are spontaneous, macerations extraordinarily long, and aging occurs in large, old Slavonian oak for periods that would be considered radical even by traditional standards. The resulting wines are among the most profound and age-worthy produced anywhere in Italy—severe and impenetrable in youth, transcendent with time.
