2022 Simon di Brezzan Friulano
This 2022 Friulano from Simon di Brezzan is a classic expression of one of Friuli’s most important white grape varieties.
I have reviewed one wine from Simon di Brezzan: the 2022 Simon di Brezzan Friulano (91 points).
Simon di Brezzan farms in the Collio Goriziano, the hill country along Friuli’s eastern border where the region’s most complete white wines are made. The defining feature is the soil: ponca, a friable layering of marl and sandstone that drains readily and gives Friulian whites their mineral tension. These are whites of structure rather than aromatic display, built for the table.
Friulano, long known as Tocai and still the emblematic grape of these hills, is the clearest statement here. The 2022 pours pale straw with green reflections and offers green apple, pear and white peach with wildflowers, chamomile and a distinct hint of bitter almond. Medium-bodied, with crisp acidity and a slightly oily texture, it balances orchard fruit with a savory, almost saline minerality and ends clean, dry and persistent on the grape’s signature almond note, a classic partner for prosciutto crudo.
