Spitalerhof

I have reviewed three wines from Spitalerhof, all from the 2023 vintage, all from Alto Adige. Scores range from 91 to 93, averaging 92; the highest is the 2023 Spitalerhof Sylvaner Sepps Alte Reben (93 points). Spitalerhof also features in one journal article on this site.

Spitalerhof is a small family estate and traditional buschenschank on the steep slopes of the Valle Isarco at Chiusa, in Alto Adige, led by Michael Oberpertinger. Farming sustainably and with low intervention in a rugged mountain environment, it makes wines of piercing minerality, crystalline acidity and intense Alpine aromatics.

Sylvaner is one of the oldest varieties of the Valle Isarco, grown there since the Middle Ages, and the Sylvaner Sepps Alte Reben, from old vines, is a benchmark for the grape in Alto Adige: apricot, almond and white flowers on a refreshing, mineral palate. The Grüner Veltliner honours the region’s Austrian heritage with white pepper, green pear and citrus, precise and elegant, and the Sauvignon Blanc offers citrus, tropical fruit, fresh herbs and stony minerality.

The estate also works with Vernatsch, Lagrein and Gewürztraminer — a quintessential small-scale Alto Adige producer of remarkable purity and tension.
