Montefico is one of the Barbaresco commune’s most historically significant MGAs, a southeast-facing site on Tortonian blue-grey marl soils that has been central to Produttori del Barbaresco’s celebrated single-vineyard program for decades. Sitting at 170–220 metres on the gently undulating terrain characteristic of the Barbaresco zone, Montefico benefits from the softer Tortonian geology — in contrast to the harder Helvetian-Serravallian soils of Serralunga — producing Nebbiolo of aromatic expressiveness, textural elegance, and a more accessible tannic frame.
Barbaresco from Montefico shows the classic commune profile: rose petal, dried cherry, spice, and a subtle mineral note on the nose; medium-weight tannins, good acidity, and a clean, fragrant finish on the palate. The wines are approachable earlier than most Barolo of comparable quality — eight to twelve years of bottle aging is typically sufficient — yet they continue to develop interest across a further decade, adding leather, dried herbs, and truffle as they mature. Produttori del Barbaresco’s Montefico Riserva has established the site’s credibility over many vintages, demonstrating consistent quality and genuine site-specificity. It is a Barbaresco of the authentic, mid-weight style that the appellation produces better than anywhere else in Italy.
