I have reviewed one wine from Allegrini: the 2016 Allegrini “Fieramonte” Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva (98 points).
The Allegrini family is a towering name in the Veneto, credited with changing Valpolicella by pairing modern precision with deep respect for the region’s native varieties. Based in Fumane, in the Valpolicella Classico zone, the family helped refine the appassimento technique behind Amarone, making wines that are rich and powerful yet fresh and free of oxidative notes.
Allegrini also pioneered single-vineyard crus such as La Grola and La Poja, the latter a pure expression of Corvina Veronese, and its range shows how versatile the Classico zone can be: polished, intense and true to the grapes.
At the top sits “Fieramonte”, first produced in the 1960s and recently revived as an Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva, the estate’s most elegant and profound wine. The 2016 is monumental: ripe blackberry, dried cherry and fig, dark chocolate, sweet tobacco and baking spice, lifted by herbs, cedar and crushed stone. The palate is rich and impeccably structured, with black fruit, dried plum, licorice and espresso on a long finish that never loses its elegance.
