I have reviewed two wines from Bibbiano, from the 2011 to 2014 vintages, across Chianti Classico and Toscana. All are Sangiovese. Scores range from 95 to 95, averaging 95; the highest is the 2011 Bibbiano Vigna Capannino Chianti Classico Gran Selezione (95 points).
Tenuta di Bibbiano, in Castellina in Chianti, is one of Chianti’s oldest estates, with origins in the 11th century, and has belonged to the Marrocchesi Marzi family since 1865; today Tommaso and Federico Marrocchesi Marzi manage it. The estate is certified organic and known for its focus on Sangiovese clones suited to its high, rocky soils, producing Chianti Classico of structure, purity and savory, balsamic edge.
Vigna del Capannino, the Gran Selezione, is pure Castellina alberese in the glass; by refusing to mask its top site with small, toasted oak, Bibbiano keeps a nervous energy that cuts through the fruit, with blood orange, tart wild cherry and crushed iron on a rigid vertical spine. Bibbianaccio returns to Chianti’s pre-international blend: 60% Sangiovese, 34% Colorino and a little Malvasia Bianca and Trebbiano, from the estate’s best vineyard, aged in small and large oak, with Colorino bringing depth and the white grapes lift.
