2023 Blason Friulano Isonzo Del Friuli
Friulano, once called Tocai, is the most important variety in the region of Friuli. This 2023 Friulano is a crisp
I have reviewed three wines from Blason, from the 2022 to 2023 vintages, all from Isonzo. Most are Friulano. Scores range from 90 to 91, averaging 90; the highest is the 2022 Blason Friulano Isonzo Del Friuli Blasonato (91 points).
Blason is a historic family estate in the Isonzo DOC of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, founded in the post-war era and now led by Giovanni Blason. Its vineyards sit on the mineral-rich alluvial soils of the river Isonzo, cooled by breezes from the Adriatic, and its reputation rests on crisp, precise white wines.
The Friulano — once called Tocai, the region’s most important variety — is delicate and aromatic, with white peach, almond blossom, fresh herbs and the grape’s classic bitter-almond finish. Blasonato is a slightly macerated, richer and more textured take on Friulano, with ripe pear, chamomile and a touch of salinity. The Pinot Grigio is a world away from mass-market versions: zippy, clean and saline, with green apple, lemon zest and wildflowers.
These are honest, food-friendly wines made for the seafood-rich cuisine of the region.

This is a slightly more macerated interpretation of this grape. The vineyards are in the Isonzo subzone, a river-influenced area
