Ferrero

I have reviewed two wines from Ferrero, from the 2019 to 2020 vintages, all from Brunello di Montalcino. All are Sangiovese. Scores range from 94 to 94, averaging 94; the highest is the 2019 Ferrero Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (94 points). Ferrero also features in two journal articles on this site.

Claudia Ferrero is a small, passionate producer in Montalcino with a reputation for wines of high quality and real value. Originally from Piedmont, she runs the estate with her husband, Pablo Harri. The vineyards lie in the Pascena area near Sant’Angelo in Colle, in the south-western part of the appellation, on clay-rich soils mixed with limestone and marine sediments. The warmer microclimate adds ripeness and concentration, and the soils give structure and depth while keeping freshness.

The result is Brunello with bold fruit, velvety tannins and serious drinkability, honest and handcrafted. The warm 2020 is open-armed and inviting, full-bodied, juicy and earthy, a Brunello for tonight. The 2019 Riserva, from a five-star vintage, frames that southern richness with the year’s impeccable structure: blackberry, cured tobacco, leather and dark chocolate, lifted by balsamic freshness.

The estate also makes “Pepita”, an IGT blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that shows the versatility of its terroir.
