I have reviewed one wine from La Monacesca: the 2020 La Monacesca Mirum Verdicchio Di Matelica Riserva (95 points).
In the Apennine foothills of the Marche, La Monacesca is the gold standard for Verdicchio di Matelica. Unlike the coastal Castelli di Jesi zone, Matelica has a landlocked, continental climate with wide day-night temperature swings, which gives Verdicchio a precise, mineral-driven profile. Proprietor Aldo Cifola uses this terroir to make Verdicchio of real structure, striking acidity and savory minerality.
The estate favours late harvests and long ageing on the fine lees without oak, and it makes some of Italy’s most serious and age-worthy whites from old vines in its highland vineyards.
The flagship “Mirum” Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva, raised in stainless steel for 18 months and then a further year in bottle, is a masterclass in texture. The 2020 is concentrated and layered, with yellow apple, pear, orange zest and almond blossom, honey, chamomile and wet stone. Rich yet balanced by bright acidity, it ends long on bitter orange, almond, marzipan and herbs, and it will develop for ten to fifteen years.
