La Monacesca "Mirum" Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva 2020 has always been one of my favorite ‘Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva DOCG’.
Made from old Verdicchio vines grown in the highland vineyards of the Marche region, this wine showcases the depth, complexity and aging ability that Verdicchio can achieve when handled with care.
On the nose the wine is concentrated and layered. It has notes of yellow apple, pear, orange zest and almond blossom. Highlighted with notes of honey, chamomile and wet mineral. The palate is rich and structured.
With an excellent balance of bright acidity and creamy, textured, ripe fruit flavors. Bitter orange and almond with a touch of elegance. And a long, luxurious scent that hints at marzipan and crushed herbs. What a wine!
What sets La Monacesca's "Mirum" apart is that it is an expression of the Matelica terroir region, which is cooler, and more continental compared to coastal ‘Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi’, giving the wine a precise, mineral-driven profile.
"Mirum" is wine made from stainless steel, aged for 18 months and bottle aged for an additional year. Designed to last beautifully for 10-15 years, with increasing complexity.
2020 La Monacesca Mirum Verdicchio Di Matelica Riserva
In the Apennine foothills of the Marche, La Monacesca is the gold standard for Verdicchio di Matelica. Unlike the coastal Castelli di Jesi zone, Matelica has a landlocked, continental climate with wide day-night temperature swings, which gives Verdicchio a precise, mineral-driven profile. Proprietor Aldo Cifola uses this terroir to make Verdicchio of real structure, striking acidity and savory minerality.
The estate favours late harvests and long ageing on the fine lees without oak, and it makes some of Italy’s most serious and age-worthy whites from old vines in its highland vineyards.
The flagship “Mirum” Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva, raised in stainless steel for 18 months and then a further year in bottle, is a masterclass in texture. The 2020 is concentrated and layered, with yellow apple, pear, orange zest and almond blossom, honey, chamomile and wet stone. Rich yet balanced by bright acidity, it ends long on bitter orange, almond, marzipan and herbs, and it will develop for ten to fifteen years.
