I have reviewed one wine from Lornano: the 2024 Lornano Helena Toscana Igt (96 points).
Fattoria Lornano is a historic family-run estate in the hills of Castellina in Chianti, owned by the same family since 1904. It is a bastion of the Castellina style, rich, dark-fruited and structured, and a founding member of the Chianti Classico consorzio. The focus is Sangiovese, sometimes blended with small amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon for the Riserva and Gran Selezione, and the wines are known for consistency and value.
“Helena”, a Toscana IGT, steps outside the rules of Chianti Classico to deliver something richer. Typically 80% Sangiovese with 10% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the best plots, and aged in used French barriques, it is deep ruby, with blackberry, dark plum and black cherry wrapped in sweet tobacco, vanilla, cedar and dark chocolate. Full-bodied and velvety, with polished tannins and a Tuscan dusting of earth, it is a wine for prime rib or a hearty stew.
