I have reviewed one wine from Maculan: the 2006 Maculan “Fratta” Cabernet-Merlot Veneto Rosso (96 points).
Fausto Maculan is the man who put the tiny Breganze DOC on the world wine map. At the foot of the Alps in the Veneto, Maculan has mastered both international varieties and the native Vespaiola. The estate is legendary for its sweet wines, particularly “Torcolato” and “Acininobili”, treating dessert wine with the reverence of Sauternes and using drying racks and botrytis to create nectars of great complexity.
Its Bordeaux blends are equally acclaimed. “Fratta”, a Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, combines Veneto tradition with modern craftsmanship. The 2006 has aged beautifully: blackberry, cassis and black cherry with tobacco, leather, cedar and fine spice, rich yet refined tannins, and layers of dark fruit, espresso and vanilla from oak on a long, smooth finish. It pairs with grilled meats and hearty stews.
Maculan represents the meeting of technical precision and hedonistic pleasure in northern Italian winemaking.
The 2006 Maculan “Fratta” is not only a great wine. But it is also a special place for me personally.
