I have reviewed one wine from Montepeloso: the 2022 Montepeloso “Eneo” Toscana (95 points).
Fabio Chiarelotto is the philosopher-winemaker behind Montepeloso, a boutique estate in Suvereto on the Tuscan coast, near Bolgheri. A perfectionist, he reshaped the vineyards, often regrafting vines, to focus on Mediterranean varieties suited to the hot, dry climate. His blends, “A Quo”, “Eneo” and “Gabbro”, use grapes such as Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Marselan and Alicante Bouschet alongside Cabernet. The approach is low-intervention, and the wines smell of macchia, spice and sun-baked earth: opulent and silky, with a wild, savory coastal streak.
The 2022 “Eneo” blends 65% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Malvasia Nera. It offers ripe blackberry, dark cherry and plum with Mediterranean herbs, tobacco and crushed rock, a full yet subtle palate of velvety tannins and vibrant acidity, and dark fruit, cocoa and spice. The nearby Tyrrhenian Sea adds a saline freshness that keeps it from ever feeling heavy.
